CSIRO has released a new report assessing the state of play for CO₂ utilisation in Australia, offering a timely update on how the sector has evolved since its 2021 CO₂ Utilisation Roadmap.
Australia is well positioned to scale CO₂ utilisation thanks to its abundant renewable energy resources and concentrated industrial emissions. The report confirms this strong potential, while also clearly identifying the cost, technical and regulatory challenges that must be addressed to unlock commercial-scale deployment.
Looking ahead to 2050, CSIRO’s market analysis explores domestic demand and development pathways for a range of CO₂-derived products, including methanol, sustainable aviation fuel, urea, mineral aggregates, and supplementary cementitious materials—sectors where CO₂ utilisation could play a meaningful role in decarbonising hard-to-abate industries.
Developed in close collaboration with government, industry and research partners, including CO₂ Value Australia, CSR, MCi Carbon, Orica, the RECARB Hub and the Western Australia Department of Energy and Economic Diversification, the report provides practical market insights for decision-makers seeking to accelerate investment and scale-up of CO₂ utilisation technologies in Australia.
CO₂ Value Europe contributed to this work by sharing experience from the scaling of CCU solutions across the EU and beyond, helping to inform pathways from pilot projects to commercial markets.
