The Polish presidency of the Council of the European Union started on 1 January and will run until the end of June 2025. CO₂ Value Europe takes note of the Presidency’s programme and encourages it to ensure that cleantech – including CCU technologies – can play its necessary role in enhancing the Union’s competitiveness, in particular by implementing recommendations from the ICM Forum’s Report on enabling conditions for industrial deployment of CCU. In particular, the following priorities present key opportunities to achieve this:
🔵 Strengthening Europe’s competitiveness while decarbonising its economy: We call on the Presidency to guarantee that the progress made on environmental topics during the previous legislative cycle (2019-2024) is doubled down on and gives net zero industries the legislative certainty they need.
🔵 Monitoring public procurement initiatives: We encourage the Presidency to ensure that all public procurement includes a minimum sustainable products threshold, particularly in construction projects, where CO₂ mineralisation already offers a clean alternative to traditional building materials.
🔵 Working on the transformation of the maritime sector: When accompanying the sector’s transition, we invite the Presidency to take into account the crucial role of #CCU fuels, such as e-methanol, in helping to deliver on FuelEU Maritime GHG reduction objectives.
🔵 Supporting the energy transition: We welcome the Presidency’s intention to support the energy sector’s transition, including through financial instruments, as an efficient deployment of CCU technologies must go hand in hand with the deployment of clean energy alternatives.
🔵 Highlighting the role of science to support European competitiveness: In line with the objectives of the Clean Industrial Deal, we urge the Polish Presidency to prioritise net zero technology research projects, including CCU, when reviewing Horizon Europe and the future FP10.
