Since the end of the summer break, CO₂ Value Europe’s exceptional policy team has resumed its engagement with EU institutions, national and European stakeholders, and global partners to advance the interests of our members and promote the role of Carbon Capture and Utilisation (#CCU) in Europe’s climate and industrial agenda. From high-level policy discussions to consultation feedback, here are some key highlights from the past two months:

🔵 Ensuring that the Industrial Accelerator Act creates a market for captured carbon
Our policy team held discussions with DG GROW on how the ICMA can help kick-start the market for CCU products. CO₂ Value Europe emphasised the need for EU institutions to take ownership of CCU incentives.

🔵 Circular Economy Act (CEA): One Step Too Short for a Circular Carbon Economy
At the Renewable Materials Conference in Siegburg, our colleagues spoke with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV) about our vision of how CCU contributes to circularity and helps move away from relying on fossil resources such as oil and gas for producing virgin chemicals and plastics.

🔵 Sharing Data on CCU Technologies
Our colleagues Célia Sapart and Anastasios Perimenis had a fruitful discussion with the European Commission regarding the modelling of the role of CCU in reaching the EU’s climate targets, in terms of projections, volumes and energy requirements.

🔵 Demystifying CCU-Related Policies
Our colleagues met with the team of Belgian MEP and former Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès to discuss the role of CCU technologies in providing alternative carbon feedstock for European industry.

Additionally, the policy team took part in roundtables and conferences to present and discuss the current CCU legislative framework. Warm thanks to our members Metsä Group, CoLAB Net4CO2 and Écosystème D for their kind invitations to these events.

🔵 Consultations
In addition to our responses to the Commission’s consultations on STIP, CO₂ transport infrastructure, and the Union’s 2040 climate targets, CO₂ Value Europe also contributed to those on DACCS, BioCCS, and biochar, highlighting in particular the need to adopt clear and timely rules on permanent CCU removals when using biogenic or DAC-derived CO₂.
Our team also shared our position with Bellona on developing an open-access European CO₂ transport infrastructure for both CCU and CCS, and responded to German MEP Christian Ehler’s call for feedback on the Energy Omnibus.

We’re truly grateful to all our members, institutional partners, and collaborators for their continued support as we work to shape a policy environment where CCU can thrive across Europe.
Our policy team has had an incredibly busy and productive period, achieving great progress in raising the profile of CCU in key EU policy discussions. We’ll keep advocating to ensure CCU implementation and applications remain high on Europe’s climate and industrial agenda.
We’re proud to keep working in the interests of our members, helping to drive forward practical, sustainable and tangible solutions for a more circular and competitive European economy.
