This summer, our Policy Team has been actively engaging with stakeholders across Europe to advance the interests of our members and to keep Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) firmly on the EU policy agenda. From  conferences to meetings with MEPs at the European Parliament, here are some of the season’s key highlights:

🔵 9th European Air Transport University

On 1 July, our Senior Policy Officer, Franklin Streichenberger, participated in a panel on EU legislation on sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in Hamburg and presented key findings from CO₂ Value Europe’s quantitative assessment.
Our colleague’s talk highlighted the varying environmental impacts of efuels, the scale of captured carbon required under ReFuelEU, and the need to revisit process emission rules post-2041. He also shared CO₂ Value Europe’s report showing CCU could cut at least 38% of aviation GHG emissions by 2050.

🔵 Meeting with the team of MEP Radan Kanev

On 14 July, our Policy Team met with the team of MEP Radan Kanev (EPP, BG). We got to expose the CCU value chain’s points regarding low-carbon fuels (LCFs) and their role in the EU’s climate goals, and explored the connection between circularity and CCU in light of upcoming legislations (e.g. Circular Economy Act).

🔵 Meeting with MEP Dennis Radtke

On 17 July, our Policy Team met with MEP Dennis Radtke (EPP, DE) to discuss the role of CCU in the chemical sector’s transition.

Our colleagues exchanged with MEP Radtke about the role of CCU technologies in cutting fossil fuel dependence while supporting industrial competitiveness. They also discussed upcoming legislation with major implications for CCU, including the Chemicals Industry Package.

🔵 CO₂ Value Europe  Voices in ETS Consultation

On 29 July, CO₂ Value Europe was interviewed by Guidehouse consultancy on behalf of the European Commission.
The discussion focused on the 2026 EU ETS review and its potential impact on the CCU value chain.
Our Policy Team shared insights on the challenges and opportunities of a reformed ETS for CCU deployment. Detailed recommendations are available in our published position paper here.

Additionally, on 14 July, our colleague Franklin attended the French National Day celebration organised in Brussels by the French Permanent Representation. President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, EVP Stéphane Séjourné, and the French Permanent Representative delivered powerful speeches on international trade and the Union’s key challenges.

Our Policy Team also exchanged with experts from the Haut conseil pour le climat (High Council on Climate) on the CCU’s role in reducing emissions in France.
