CO₂ Value Europe welcomes the newly appointed European College of Commissioners as they begin their mandate for 2024-2029.

As the voice of the Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) community in Europe and beyond, we are optimistic that defossilising Europe will remain a top priority for the Commission in the years ahead, by advancing CCU as a key solution for reaching climate targets in 2030, 2035, 2040 and ultimately achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

CCU has an immense potential to drive a circular and more sustainable economy by capturing and transforming CO₂ emissions into valuable products, like synthetic fuels, chemicals and construction materials.

In a difficult context of rising costs and looming crises in several key EU industries, the new Commission must put forward ambitious and fit-for-purpose policies to position Europe as a global leader in environmental innovation while restoring its industrial competitiveness.

Among our recommendations, we urge EU institutions to:

🔵 Enable the scale-up of CCU technologies at European and national levels by investing in infrastructures, innovation, and robust policy frameworks.

🔵 Ensure CCU plays a central role in the upcoming Clean Industrial Deal, enhancing EU competitiveness and creating high-quality jobs across Europe.

🔵 Introduce legal obligations to use alternative carbon feedstocks (e.g. quotas) in the production of chemicals and product categories such as packaging, textiles or cosmetics to drive their manufacturing away from fossil fuels.

🔵 Increase investments in CCU research and innovation to drive technological breakthroughs and strengthen Europe’s industrial leadership.

We look forward to working closely with the new Commission to build a resilient, more sustainable, and circular Europe for all.
