Founded in 2020 by Dr David Ortega, Phase Biolabs is headquartered in Nottingham, UK. The company focuses on Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) to create new value chains by upcycling waste CO₂ emissions into valuable chemicals and electrofuels, contributing to a circular economy and net-zero goals.
Our new member converts CO₂ emissions into ethanol using gas fermentation technology. Their bioprocess uses bacteria as biocatalysts to convert industrial waste gases at high efficiencies and yields while acting on CO₂ directly. The company specialises in genetic engineering and the modification of bacteria to enhance performance and enable the production of new molecules from waste gases creating a platform technology.
They have established partnership agreements with suppliers of CO₂ captured from biogenic sources as well as producers of renewable H₂ and are working with the existing bioethanol industry to enhance output and efficiency through a retrofit model.
Phase is currently operating a small pilot plant at its UK facilities and is seeking EU/UK partners and locations for a commercial demonstration plant. Our new member has also collaborated with several academic institutions and SMEs across the EU through EU-funded projects in 2024 and 2025 focused on circularity through CO₂ valorisation and recycling.
