Christopher vom Berg and Michael Carus, Executive Managers at our member novaInstitute, co-authored a new paper titled “Making a Case for Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) – It is Much More Than Just a Carbon Removal Technology”. The study, commissioned by the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI), underscores the pivotal role of CCU in shaping a sustainable future and the pressing need for increased political recognition and support.
The report highlights how CCU is much more than a carbon removal technology, able to offer multiple solutions to pressing problems of our modern world and support several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) if implemented properly.
Some key takeaways:
Fossil Carbon Substitution: CCU enables us to replace fossil carbon in industries where carbon remains essential.
Circular Economy: CCU promotes circularity, reducing waste and maximising resources.
Emission Reduction: it narrows the emission gap, contributing significantly to climate change mitigation.
Sustainable Carbon Cycles: CCU fosters sustainable carbon management practices.
Innovation Driver: it fuels innovation across various sectors.
Local Value: CCU initiatives generate local economic value.
Job Growth: it creates opportunities for job growth in emerging industries.
While CCU’s relevance is not yet fully recognised in Europe, the authors aim to emphasise that CCU represents a central pillar for the most significant transformation in the chemical and material industry since the Industrial Revolution. The time to support and embrace CCU is now, as it paves the way for a more sustainable future.
CO₂ Value Europe is a member of RCI, an alliance of more than 60 companies, SMEs and start-ups committed to supporting and speeding up the transition from fossil carbon to renewable carbon for all organic chemicals and materials.
