The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have launched ‘Finvest@ETAF’, a global platform to accelerate investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and clean aviation energy projects.
Through IRENA’s financing network and ICAO’s technical expertise, ‘Finvest@ETAF’ will help turn promising ideas into bankable, deployable projects, linking developers with public and private financiers worldwide. Project submissions will undergo joint screening by IRENA and ICAO experts before being presented to financing and de-risking partners under the ETAF Platform.
This collaboration marks a major milestone toward net-zero aviation, creating a first-of-its-kind gateway between innovators and investors to scale up cleaner flight technologies.
Carbon capture and renewable power could supply a major share of future SAF. Through Power-to-X technology, captured CO₂ and water are converted into synthetic jet fuels, cutting emissions without using food resources, though costs and energy needs remain high.
As part of our ongoing policy engagement, CO₂ Value Europe will continue to highlight the need for, and welcome, measures that unlock investment in Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) fuels, particularly for the shipping and aviation sectors, which remain among the most difficult to defossilise in transport.
