The EU Joint Research Centre – part of the European Commission which provides independent, evidence-based scientific knowledge to support EU policies – recently published two reports related to Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU). The reports were published under the Clean Energy Technology Observatory which monitors EU research and innovation activities on clean energy technologies and solutions.
The first report, ‘Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage in the European Union’, offers an overview of the current status and trends in CCU and carbon capture and storage technologies, including their value chains, market position within the EU, and global competitiveness. It highlights the rapid growth in the development of CCU technologies in recent years, as well as the increasing funding and scientific publications related to this field.
The second report, ‘Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) in the European Union’ examines the conversion pathways for producing RFNBO, beginning with key inputs such as hydrogen and CO2 captured through CCU. The study assesses the Technology Readiness Level (TRL), energy requirements, and environmental impact of existing RFNBO conversion pathways derived from the fossil fuel refining and chemical industries. It also offers an overview of the current legislation and market landscape for RFNBO in the EU.
