Welcome to Our New Member, Metsä Group!

Metsä Groupis a Finnish international forest industry group that primarily sources wood from its cooperative owner-members. Metsä Group is committed to the principles of regenerative forestry and actively promotes the bioeconomy and circular economy. Its operations span five business areas, including the innovation company Metsä Spring, which focuses on wood supply and forest services, wood products, sawn timber, pulp, paperboard, and innovative materials such as textile fibres and moulded fibre-based packaging.

Our new member is also exploring the development of a Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) process at one of its bioproduct mills, aiming to capture wood-based carbon dioxide (bio-CO₂). Bio-CO₂ is a valuable raw material in the hydrogen economy’s products and can replace fossil-based carbon in producing chemicals, liquid fuels, and plastics. The process would capture CO₂ from flue gases in the recovery boiler and lime kiln, key components of the chemical pulping process.

The carbon capture process will be piloted in Metsä Group’s Rauma mill area in 2025 together with Andriz. If technically feasible, this initiative could introduce a new high-volume, wood-based raw material for the forest industry. Currently, Metsä Group’s mills generate around 12 million tonnes of wood-based CO₂ annually.
