On the 16th of April, the Netherlands, France, Czechia, and Ireland called for a European policy package on sustainable carbon in the chemical industry.

“[Captured] CO2” is listed by the 4 countries as one of the sources of sustainable carbon to be incentivised to substitute virgin fossil carbon. They additionally called for “[market] pull through product regulation, [to] help create a viable European market for products from sustainable carbon sources.”

As Member States are reviewing their National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs), to be handed to the European Commission in June 2024, this initiative from the 4 EU countries shows a clear interest in carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technologies by different EU Member States and the need for additional EU action to support the deployment of CCU chemicals in particular.
