Deepak Pant appointed Lead Author
Deepak Pant, member of CO₂ Value Europe’s Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), has been appointed as a Lead Author for the upcoming IPCC Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage.
This appointment reflects the recognised expertise within CO₂ Value Europe’s network and ensures that perspectives from the CCU community are well represented in an important international scientific process. The report will provide governments with updated guidance to better estimate CO₂ emissions and removals, including those linked to emerging technologies such as CCU.
First Lead Author Meeting held in Rome
Deepak Pant has just returned from Rome, where more than 150 experts gathered for the first Lead Author Meeting (LAM1). This initial meeting focused on defining the scope and structure of the report and aligning on the overall approach.
While this marks an important milestone, it also signals the start of a more detailed and technical phase of work.
A growing need for robust methodologies
As carbon management technologies continue to scale, the need for clear and consistent accounting methods becomes increasingly important. The IPCC report will play a key role in supporting countries to develop reliable national greenhouse gas inventories.
Deepak Pant highlighted:
“As CCU technologies scale globally, establishing robust, transparent, and science-based methodologies for national GHG inventories is more critical than ever. While the LAM1 was an incredible start, focused on the scope and structure of the report, the real work begins now as we will dive deep to elaborate on the drafts and refine the technical frameworks.”
Next steps and timeline
Following the first meeting, Lead Authors will begin drafting the report and further developing the methodologies.
A first draft is expected to be released for peer review in fall 2026, with final publication planned by the end of 2027. Find more here.
