CCUS-ZEN Webinar 3 – The social, economic, political, and legal dimensions of developing carbon management infrastructure in Europe
September 19, 2024 @ 2:00 pm - September 20, 2024 @ 3:00 pm

CCUS-ZEN project in which CO2 Value Europe is a proud Consortium partner organises a webinar series that started in April and will run through to the end of the project. Webinar 1 took place in April and presented an overview of the CCUS ZEN project. Webinar 2 took place in May, presenting the high-level technical mapping that was carried out for two regions: the Baltic Sea region and the Mediterranean Sea region.
Webinar 3 will take place on Thursday, the 19th of September from 2.00-3.00 pm (CEST), and early registration is now open. This webinar will present the non-technical challenges that Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) faces across social, economic, political, and legal dimensions. Some of these are cross-cutting – for example, when it comes to public trust, regulation, MRV, and accounting, where the clarity of responsibilities and coordination through private contracts needs to be in place. The value-chain partners and regulatory entities involved need to find and operationalise common approaches.
Another example is biomass processing, which is now being addressed in the regulatory landscape, and may alter the incentives for industries to engage in CCUS. At the same time, the EU signals the ineligibility of fossil CO₂ sources for capture. For cases of international value-chains, bilateral state agreements can help give direction and certainty alongside private contracts. Progress must be proactively communicated to broader publics to highlight.
