Our member Econic Technologies, together with their partner Changhua Chemical, have launched the world’s first commercial CO₂-based polyols facility, marking a major milestone for carbon capture utilisation (CCU) at an industrial scale and the future of sustainable materials.
Located in Lianyungang, China, the new facility is the first commercial-scale plant producing polycarbonate ether (PCE) polyols made using captured CO₂. Branded as Carnol™, these materials deliver high performance with a 30% lower carbon footprint compared to conventional polyols, while maintaining performance across foams, coatings, and elastomers. Additional applications include lightweight automotive parts, protective apparel and footwear, and insulating construction materials.
With an initial production capacity of 80,000 tons in 2026 and ambitions to scale beyond 1 million tons, this achievement demonstrates that carbon capture and utilisation is no longer just a concept, but a viable, scalable industrial solution.
As Econic Technologies and its global partners continue to expand this technology, they are helping pave the way toward a lower-carbon future for the chemicals and materials industry.
