Welcome to Our New Member Celanese!

Celanese is a global chemical and specialty materials company. The company’s broad product portfolio serves a diverse set of end-use applications including chemical additives, construction, consumer and industrial adhesives, medical, consumer electronics, energy storage, filtration, paints and coatings, paper and packaging, industrial applications and textiles.

In January 2024, Celanese announced that it began running a carbon capture and utilization (hashtagCCU) project at its Clear Lake, Texas, site as part of its Fairway Methanol joint venture with Mitsui & Co., Ltd. The project is expected to capture 180,000 metric tons of CO₂ industrial emissions and produce 130,000 metric tons of low-carbon methanol per year.

Our new member uses hashtagCCU to capture CO₂ industrial emissions that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere from both Celanese and third-party sources, which account for 80% of the captured CO₂ waste, and applies reduced-carbon-intensity hydrogen to chemically convert the captured CO₂ into a methanol building block used for downstream production. This low-carbon input is then used to reduce traditional fossil fuel-based raw materials and can help produce a wide range of end products across most major industries.

Celanese also achieved ISCC CFC Certification for Low Carbon CCU Methanol and the American Chemistry Council’s 2024 Sustainability Leadership Award for Achievements in Circularity.
